Only these few basic details are known, but within the centuries legends and the rise in popularity of St. Nicholas triggered the Christmas tradition of the jolly old man who secretly brings toys to children. Each and every year on December 6th, there’s services held on the church.

The Cave Churches of Cappadocia – To save themselves from Roman persecution, whole cities of Anatolian Christian dug huge underground cities to conceal in, and frescoed cave churches to worship in. An extremely unique place featuring a very unique heritage, don’t miss it!

The Sumela Monastery, Trabzon – The 1000-year-old Monastery in the Virgin Mary at Sumela, with it’s mountain setting, clinging to a sheer rock cliff in the middle of evergreen forests, may be the most impressive sight on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. Two Athenian monks built the Monastery inside the fourth century AD and it may easily be visited on a day trip from Trabzon.

Saint Paul’s Church, Tarsus – A recently available announcement from the Catholic Church has added one more reason to visit Turkey’s Christian sites; Pope Benedict officially launched the Vatican’s “Year of St. Paul” on June 28th, celebrating one of Jesus’ most essential disciples. Paul came to be 2,000 in the past in Tarsus, southern Turkey near Mersin. This is a rare and unique opportunity to experience a religious service in St. Paul’s Church. Services will likely be offered all year round.

The Seven Churches in the Apocalypse – In Revelation, Jesus instructs his servant John to: “Write in a book what thou seest, and send it unto the seven churches which can be in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.” – Revelation 1:11
